The axis "Logic, Graphs, and Languages" (leader Sylvain Lombardy) is interested in the fundamental concepts of language theory such as grammars, automata, and recognizability expressed in terms of congruences, which were first developed for words and finite and infinite terms but are now applied to other objects such as partial orders and graphs, and to other mathematical structures than monoid and free algebra such as free group and different types of semi-groups. The general objectives are still to describe families of objects by finite means and to decide various properties of objects and/or infinite sets given by their finite descriptions.
