Breaking down language barriers so that a group of people who do not speak the same language can have a fluid conversation is the ambition of a program led by a group of European researchers, including Jean-Luc Rouas (TAD team, I&S department) at LaBRI.

Talking to someone who doesn't speak our language can be complicated. While online tools and apps can help, conversations often remain unnatural. Thanks to advances in artificial intelligence, it is now possible to develop instant voice translation technologies capable of translating spoken exchanges in real time. To bring this idea to fruition, a collaboration of European researchers, led by Professor Cristell Maneux of the University of Bordeaux, has proposed a 3D accelerator concept dedicated to artificial neural networks that improves computing times and reduces power consumption. It could be used to create small earphones capable of translating spoken language instantly, without the need for internet access.
